Types of nail fungus
There are many types of fungi that can affect the nails. The most common of which is Trichophyton red, this type of fungus has a tendency to infect the skin
It begins at the ends of the nails and raises the nail: the most common type of fungal infection of the nails (90%). It is more common on the toes. Risk factors include old age, swimming, athlete's foot, psoriasis, diabetes and a suppressed immune system. It usually begins as a deformed area at the corner of the big toe and slowly spreads towards the skin and eventually the nails become thick and unstable.
Begins at the base of the nail and raises the nail: This is the least common type of fungal infection of the nails (3%). It is similar to the previous type but starts at the base of the nail and slowly spreads towards the head of the nail. This type always happens to people with compromised immune systems
Yeast: This type is caused by a yeast called Candida and not by the Trichophyton fungi mentioned above. It is more common in fingernails, and is probably the most common cause of fungal nails. Candida can cause nails to change color to yellow, brown, or white, or to become thickened. Some people with this disease have yeast in the mouth
